Faculty of Life and Health Sciences

The Faculty has a major commitment to research and its five Research Institutes have established national and international reputations for research quality and impact. The 400 academic staff in the Faculty are supported by some 100 research staff, 80 technical and 25 administrative/ clerical staff. All of our post graduate research students are members of the Research Graduate School. The quality of our research training is reflected in close to 100 per cent of all full-time research students graduating successfully with doctorates within four years of their initial registration.

In the most recent UK Government Research Assessment Exercise the research environment, activity and outputs of the faculty were judged to be internationally excellent. Specifically, across our seven submissions an average of 73% of the research was judged to be international in terms of its originality, significance, and rigour.

This confirms our position as a key contributor to the research enterprise within the University and illustrates our contribution to the region, and to national and international practice and policy. Our capacity and potential for research of the highest quality have recently been enhanced by a state of the art building at Coleraine encompassing the core disciplines of Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics. Further new developments include the Centre for Coastal Sciences Research at Coleraine and the Centre for Rehabilitation Sciences at Jordanstown, both accommodating yet other unique research clusters. More recently we have opened a state of the science research centre into drug discovery and matabalomics on the Coleraine campus.
