Introduction
The Food Microbiology Research Group, [FMRG] is a discrete research group
within the Northern
Ireland Centre for Diet and Health (NICHE)
at the University of Ulster. NICHE was entered in the Biomedical Sciences
unit of assessment [Unit 11a]
and was awarded a 5* rating in the most recent [2001] UK
Research
Assessment Exercise. This outstanding performance is the Unit's second
consecutive 5* rating and confirms its position as an international leader in biomedical sciences research.
The FMRG consists of Professor.
David McDowell (Professor of Food Studies),and a number
of postgraduate research students (currently 16 - on MPhil/PhD
programmes), supported by 3 technical staff.
The primary aim of this research group is to undertake collaborative research
into the microbiological challenges inherent within food production, preparation and distribution systems. Current research priorities focus on problems of direct relevance
[and are frequently supported by] the food production sector.
Research
projects include the rapid detection, assessment and control of food pathogens in complex foods and food systems.
The group
publishes widely, has attracted over
£1.1 M in research funding in recent
years and maintains numerous research contacts, with other leading research institutions and groups at national and international levels.
